Go there, see it, discuss. Personally, this movie looks far better than I expected. Of course, this is only two minutes of randomly edited footage, so who knows. What think you, fine sirs and madams?

The shot at thirty-five seconds of him swiping the cup off the table? I envisioned that exact spot, with that exact lighting, with a hat instead of a cup and a hand instead of a whip when I thought about the trailer for this movie. Kudos for the “Damn! I thought that was closer!” line (though not for his crushing the frame of a car with his meaty human body)… I think this movie’ll really benefit from a fair share of “Wow, I really HAVE been out of this for a while” stuff. I don’t foresee any of these trailers enticing me into the theater, though; it’s going to need some good reviews.

Yeah, I watched this last night and can’t say I was overly impressed. It didn’t look bad, but it didn’t look particularly interesting either.

Hopefully they don’t go overboard with the “out of it for awhile” stuff otherwise the movie will just become something of a joke and not an extension of an otherwise fun series of films.

Cate Blanchett looked good and menacing though, which was nice!

I’m not going to pretend to say that I will not see this in the theater. I’m sure I will, but whether or not I will be looking forward to it is another thing. The jury is still out on that count…

I discovered, thanks to a brief visit to Ain’t It Cool News, that the trailer for this film has been fucked with. Check out this international version http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/film/article802170.ece?CMP=KNC-powersearchSEM1&HBX_PK= wherein the bad guys (I believe they’re Russkies) are pointing machine guns at Ray Winstone and Indiana Jones and compare it to the American trailer wherein those guns have been “E.T.”ed out. God forbid our children should know of the existence of machine guns. Also, the American version has a big, stupid American flag thrown into it. Ugh! What a bunch of crap.
No matter what anyone says, I think this trailer looks cool. Cate Blanchett looks appropriately menacing, it’s nice to see Karen Allen again, and they HAVE to include SOME “Indy is old” gags because, well, Harrison Ford is old. You’ve got to acknowledge the elephant in the room. Of course, I do hope that the “Indy is old” gags aren’t overdone, and that the movie doesn’t suck, but all I’m hoping for is that this film is fun and doesn’t piss on what is possibly my favorite film trilogy (”Star Wars” is close, and sometimes neck and neck, but Indiana Jones is like the coolest film character of all time, in my humble opinion, and therefore gets the edge). As long as I’m entertained and not pissed off, I’ll be happy.

The movie looks like it’ll be a lot of fun, but the trailer was sort of lame at points. A good movie trailer should make you want to see the movie no matter how bad it actually is. Hopefully we’ll get a better one later.

And Dale, when it comes to unnecessary American Flags, nothing quite beats the one in Spiderman 3.

  5. Ecksem Diem Says:

You know, I almost commented that the American flag in the movie was just random and out of place, but I went back and watched it again and decided that it didn’t seem THAT out of place… Now I know the horrible truth.

  6. Dale Nauertz Says:

Yes, Elk, you’re absolutely right about Spider Man 3 and its unnecessary use of American flags. Hell, the entire Spidey series has suffered from unnecessary patriotism. As far as patriotism in superhero movies is concerned, it should begin and end with Superman and, of course, Captain America. Indiana Jones isn’t a superhero and, sure, I guess he fought the Nazis, but that doesn’t necessarily make him “as American as apple pie” or anything. Plenty of Europeans and Russians, for that matter, also fought the Nazis. I don’t think Indy should be immediately equated with America. Sure, he IS American, but he’s not, oh, I dunno, Captain America or anything. He trots the globe and has plenty of friends in every country. If he were exiled for some reason, I’m sure it would barely faze him to live somewhere else. Kicking the ass of evildoers is not an intrinsically American pastime. That’s all I’m saying.

P.S. The more I think about this trailer, the lamer it gets. It should have been much more iconic. After the initial thrill of seeing Indy swing through the air with a whip and run from machine guns and natives wears off, the trailer is sorta “meh”. In two more days, I may flat-out hate it.

  7. Elk Says:

Dale, now I have to resist going into a Spider-man discussion in an Indiana Jones thread. I have a few things to bitch about.

  8. Dale Nauertz Says:

Bitch away, Elk, bitch away! Indy thread be damned!

  9. Elk Says:

    Alrighty then.

Did you ever notice how if someone had a part in the movie with two or three lines, they were always the worst actors ever? Not only that, but the lines that had were also crap. The doctor that Peter sees when his powers are failing, the cops outside the burning building, various people yelling “Look! It’s Spider-man!”. They were all so terrible! And they totally should have brought the symbiote into the story earlier in 3. If they had done that, the whole multi-villain subplot might have worked. Hell, Harry’s subplot went fine, that is, except for his butler who had, like, 5 lines. Coincidence?

  10. Dale Nauertz Says:

You’re right, most of the sideline actors (except for the god-like Bruce Campbell who turns up in each movie to kick some ass) suck donkey balls. Plus, those movies are always a hell of a lot of fun to me on the first viewing, but get worse with each subsequent viewing. When I first saw the original “Spider Man” I thought it was the best superhero movie ever, but now I think it’s somewhere below “Ghost Rider” (which was relentlessly entertaining cheese). The second one holds up better than the others, but it’s still overrated as all hell (they go too overboard on making Peter’s life suck, the drink that gets thrown in his face is the point where I thought they were just piling it on too much) plus there are too many damn speeches about responsibility in every single one of them and the third one has the same problem as the two Schumacher Batmans: too many villains spread too thinly. The symbiote thing would have been enough on its own, they didn’t need to have Sandman and Hobgoblin, plus, Amnesia? What the hell? Is this a daytime soap opera all of a sudden? Another thing: you can’t have the woman you love, boo friggin’ hoo, you’re Spider Man. You could get all the random ass you want! Spider Man is too emo, even before he got his emo makeover in the third movie.

That’s all the bitching I have for now, but I’m sure I can think of more. C’mon, Elk, I’m sure there’s more you can bitch about!

    :takes baton:
At the moment, I am now reminded of how in the cartoon, which I used to love watching, good old Spidey had a cynical but funny attitude. Then the movies come out and he’s all serious. WTF? I loved it on the show when he ran into this one bad guy who was holding flowers and said “Oh, are those for me?”
I’ll have more later once I give it some more thought
    :holds out baton:

  12. Dale Nauertz Says:

Good point. I always thought Spidey was a smartass, which they abandoned except for a few little flourishes of such behavior (mainly in the first movie where he gives the wrestler crap for his outfit, etc.). Spidey is too much of a self-pitying, morose nerd. They’ve played up the pathos of his life and drained a lot of fun out of simply watching him swing through the concrete canyons of New York in his web. I liked the stuff in 3 where he’s digging his dark powers and the sudden appreciation the city lavishes on him. That stuff restored a much-needed sense of fun. But Spidey’s just a little too ponderous for his own good, most of the time. We expect that out of a dark character like Batman, but there needs to be more play in a kid like Spider Man. Again, probably has something to do with too many damn responsibility speeches.
